The day squash attracted 40,000 players to compete in a single global match
World Squash Day 2012 was a phenomenal experience, attracting more than 40,000 players to play in one global match to support the sport’s Olympic bid.
This year, with squash primed to make its Olympic debut in America in 2018, World Squash Day is aiming to beat that figure in partnership with World Squash, Rally28, the Squash United Foundation and the PSA Squash Tour.
WSD founder Alan Thatcher said: “Back in 2012 it was simply incredible to see so many clubs and players uniting to show their love of the game and back the Olympic campaign.”
Thatcher, who received a special award from World Squash for co-ordinating the event, added: “Sadly, that campaign failed to persuade the IOC to give squash its rightful place in the 2020 Games.
“We suffered further disappointments, of course, but now that squash is making its debut in Los Angeles in 2028 it would be great to see a similar outpouring of passion from the global squash community to beat that 2012 figure.
“We were fortunate to have so many hard-working enthusiasts in various countries leading the way to promote World Squash Day in 2012. Here in the UK, Victoria Thomason and Gabby Scott deserve special mention for their efforts, with Gabby coming up with the names for Team Squash and Team 2020.”
This year’s names are Team Allstars and Team Superstars, with the PSA set to announce the identities of leading players who will be fronting the event.
